Mike Garten

While flowers, chocolates and loving words are always welcome, homemade Mother's Day gifts are a special way to show your appreciation. This year, encourage your little ones to put some extra heart (and time) into their gift for Mom by making one of these fun Mother's Day crafts for kids.

Your toddlers, school-age children and teenagers can come together to DIY these projects — or they can easily complete them on their own, if they'd rather fly solo. Some double as Mother's Day party decorations, while others make beautiful gifts that Mom will cherish for years to come. We've given you the guidelines, but feel free to personalize any of these craft ideas with family photos, custom messages or your mom's signature colors. And if you really want to bring on the happy tears, go with one of the handprint crafts, so she can have an example of just how much her babies have grown. But don't stop here: Pair any of these crafts with a homemade card to make her Mother's Day the best one yet.

Paper Flowers

Turn pastel cupcake liners into long-lasting blooms. To make, fold the liners in half and make petal-like cuts. Fold a piece of floral wire in half and twist it around faux flower stamens, then poke the wire through the center of three to four paper liners. Wrap floral tape around the base of the liners and continue to wrap down the "stem" until you're done!

Hand-Dyed Napkins

These watercolor napkins will bring a pop of color to your Mother's Day table. Start by soaking the napkins in water, then wring out the excess and brush on fabric paint, diluting with water as you go up. Let them dry overnight and iron the fabric to set the paint before adding them to your place settings.

Egg Carton Flowers

Assemble a bouquet of egg carton flowers that she can enjoy well beyond Mother's Day. Our advice: Have the adults cut out the "flowers" first and let kids get creative with paint!

Follow these step-by-step instructions:

  1. Cut off the top of the egg carton and the extra flap on the other edge.
  2. Cut out the center columns from the carton by making small cuts with your X-Acto knife.
  3. Cut out what is left on the carton to use as egg cups.
  4. Using the center columns you cut out, clean up the edge of the opening with your scissors.
  5. Paint the columns both inside and out with some thinned out acrylic paint for a washed look.
  6. Using the egg cups, cut around the top of the cup to make it the same size all around or rip the top edge with your fingers to get a more rough look.
  7. Paint the cup with your thinned out acrylic paint for a flower look.
  8. For a petaled look, cut down the 4 corners of the cup and clean up using your scissors and rounding the tops of each petal before painting.
  9. Keep the stem in place by attaching floral wire to the middle. Use the wire cutters to hold them.

  2. Fold the 3" section of pipe cleaner down over the yarn, slide everything off the fork, and wrap the two pieces of pipe cleaner together.
  3. Carefully cut the wrapped yarn and repeat as desired.

Flower Wreath

Felt, pom poms, and the secret ingredient — egg cartons! — are transformed into a beautiful wreath you can display all spring and summer long. Making the flowers and letting them dry, then gluing them to the wreath and adding the pom-pom centers is a multi-step process, so this is better for older (and more patient) crafters.

The petals on this planter are also made from a child's thumbprint. The end result is both pretty enough to display in the garden, and a meaningful snapshot of how small their little hands can be.
